TeamSpeak 2 (Licensing)
15 Items

I've been hosting servers for at least a month or longer. Will I have to pay for all the back-owed licensing fees?
To be as fair as possible to everyone, we will only be billing you for up to SIX months of back-owed license fees even though we are well aware that many hosters out there have been hosting for years without paying fees. Depending on the amount of back-owed fees, we may grant you payment options to help get you caught up and legal and/or a discount on the back-owed fees, depending on the amount.

If you choose not to pay the licensing fees your servers will be subject to getting blacklisted which means no one will be able to connect to your servers. Legal action may also follow.

Who needs to pay for licensing?
Authorized TeamSpeak Host Provider (ATHP-Based Licensing)
Authorized TeamSpeak Host Providers (ATHPs) are entities that rent TeamSpeak servers to others for profit, typically charging their customers a monthly fee. You are subject to ATHP usage based licensing fees if you charge an access or rental fee either directly, indirectly, OR via inclusion of a TeamSpeak server as part of any rental or other paid service. All ATHPs are billed in arrears based on usage information that is automatically tracked by our software. Invoices are generated on the 1st day of every month and are due on the 15th of every month. ATHPs that fail to comply with our licensing requirements may have their servers suspended without notice. We will make every effort to contact you first if you are in violation of our licensing terms.

Examples where ATHP-Based Licensing applies:
  • Direct Fees - If you charge a monthly rental or usage fee for a TeamSpeak server OR channel you are subject to ATHP licensing fees.
  • Indirect Fees - If you are a business entity and provide a 'free trial period' or you 'sponsor' a clan or ask them to advertise for you in return for the use of a TeamSpeak server OR channel you are subject to ATHP licensing fees.
  • Inclusion Fees - Game Server Providers (GSPs) that host a TeamSpeak server OR channel to someone who is paying a monthly fee to rent a game server are subject to ATHP licensing fees.
Commercial Entities NOT Acting As ATHPs (Single Server Use Licensing)
Single Server Use Licensing is for entities that wish to use TeamSpeak in a commercial environment but are NOT in the business of renting servers. This is a one-time license fee good for one year of free version updates as they are made available. After the one year period expires, you may continue using the existing version but will not be able to upgrade without a fee.

Exapmles of commercial entities where Single Server Use Licensing applies:
  • A company that wants to use TeamSpeak as a means of teleconferencing with co-workers to cut costs on typical long distance telephone charges.
  • An ATHP that wants to use a TeamSpeak server for internal corporate communication. The TeamSpeak server MUST reside on a physical server that is NOT a part of the ATHPs normal customer base or server farm.
Non-Profit Organizations
If you host a TeamSpeak server strictly for non-profit AND you are not a commercial entity then you will not be subject to licensing fees. You must not exceed a total of 1000 slots on a maximum of 10 TeamSpeak servers within your organization. TeamSpeak servers are defined as ANY server upon which a connection is allowed - be it virtual or physical.

Examples of non-profit entities:
  • An individual hosting a single TeamSpeak server configured to allow up to 100 slots for their online gaming clan for non-profit.
  • An individual hosting 10 TeamSpeak servers with 100 slots each but does NOT ask for fees, does not advertise, or receive any sort of compensation or benefits for doing so.
  • An individual that rents a dedicated server from a hosting company but does NOT ask for fees from clan members AND does NOT rent or share space on their TeamSpeak server to others for profit.
  • A church or other non-profit organization hosting a free TeamSpeak server for online bible study discussions.
  • A school hosting one TeamSpeak server over 10 physical machines, each configured to allow no more than 100 slots and is completely free of charge to students, allowing them to receive help with homework for their classes online.

Why am I getting billed for six months of usage?
If you specify an IP address of a server that has had prior usage, the system will initially automatically bill you for SIX months of historic usage.

Because we are well aware that many host providers have been in business and making money from TeamSpeak server sales or rentals for far longer than six months, we felt it was fair to ask for only six months of back-owed licensing fees. If you have recently made a payment (prior to the billing system) please send us an email and we WILL be validating your payment and crediting your account accordingly.

I am a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) that wishes to exceed the 1000 slot limit. Is there a license available for my situation?
As of September 1st, 2006 WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING NEW APPLICATIONS FOR THE NPO LICENSE. This means you cannot host more than 1000 slots total in your environment, you cannot host more than 10 servers AND you will have to shutdown any extra servers immediately.

If you're interested in becoming a commercial host provider with unlimited earning potential, then you may wish to consider becoming an Authorized TeamSpeak Host Provider (ATHP) instead. ATHPs are companies or commercial business entities that rent servers to the public for a monthly fee OR include TeamSpeak as part of other services or offerings to their customers free of charge. Turning a profit as an ATHP while adding value to your company's services is typically a very easy thing to do once you fully understand how our licensing model works. For further information on becoming an ATHP please contact us via email at .

Please also keep in mind that if you're a clan member or you're hosting a small TeamSpeak server for your own non-profit, internal or personal use, you may not need to be licensed at all. As long as you are not using TeamSpeak within a commercial environment, do not use TeamSpeak in any way for profit, and you adhere to ONE of the following configurations for your entire organization per our EULA:
  • 10 servers, 100 slots each, for a total of 1000 slots
  • 4 servers, 250 slots each, for a total of 1000 slots
  • 2 servers, 500 slots each, for a total of 1000 slots
  • 1 server, 1000 slots, for a total of 1000 slots
There is no need to pay for licensing and you do NOT need to register on our website.

Existing/current NPOs must meet the following NPO license requirements at all times:
  • You must be a 100% non-profit entity. If we cannot easily determine this by visiting your website we may require you to provide us with documented proof.
  • You cannot advertise for any sort of profit OR for any commercial entity at all on your website. In addition, and due to abuse, we also don't allow the use of PayPal buttons anywhere on your site.
  • Your website must be up and running/active/live so we can visit the site and review its content.
  • Your entity must be large enough to require at least 1000 slots (regardless of the number of servers).

What is the cost of licensing TeamSpeak?
A completely new sales and pricing strategy has been developed to help facilitate the licensing process.

Authorized TeamSpeak Host Providers (ATHPs) can expect to see a MUCH simpler pricing plan than what they may have seen in the past in addition to discounts for volume based TeamSpeak server licensing. The new ATHP licensing model will be based on average monthly slot count usage ONLY regardless of however many servers you are hosting.

In addition, corporate entities that are not in the business of renting servers (non-ATHPs) can also purchase a Single Server Use license. This is a one-time fee good for one year of upgrades as new product versions are released. Once the license expires customers can continue using the same version of TeamSpeak but will need to pay an upgrade fee to acquire the latest version.

Please read the answer to this FAQ question for detailed information on who is subject to licensing or visit our Pricing page for general pricing information.

I have a server with multiple IP addresses (multi-homed). Which IPs should I add to the billing system? Will I be charged double if I list all IPs?
Please add ALL IPs into the billing system. You should NOT be charged double but in the rare event that you are, we will be happy to review your account and credit you accordingly.

How do I buy a license or apply to become an ATHP?
First, please note that ALL licenses must now be purchased online via this website. Simply click on the "Register Your Company" link on the "Sales" menu of this page to begin the process.

The EULA (End User License Agreement) and pricing pages, etc. commonly refer to 'slots'. What exactly is a 'slot'?
A 'slot' is utilized when a single user connection is established to a given TeamSpeak server. The maximum "slots" or "slot count" is configured on the TeamSpeak server itself and further defines the maximum # users that can simultaneously connect to a given TeamSpeak server at any time. So, for example, a server configured for 50 slots will allow up to 50 simultaneous user connections before it yields a "server full" message to the 51st user attempting to connect with the server.

I am a commercial (for-profit or for-gain) hosting entity but I do NOT charge anything at all for my TeamSpeak servers. Do I still need to pay or obtain an ATHP license?
YES you do. When you make the decision to become an Authorized TeamSpeak Host Provider (ATHP), you must obtain an ATHP license by registering on our website at https://sales.tritoncia.com/users/register.php and you must pay the MINIMUM $14 per month licensing fee just as all other ATHPs do. Please note that EVEN IF you are not charging anything at all to host TeamSpeak servers, as a commercial entity you MUST still be licensed. You simply cannot have any mention of hosting TeamSpeak servers anywhere on your commercial website at all UNLESS you are properly licensed. This also means you cannot "hold off" on obtaining an ATHP license "later" as you're waiting for your first paying customer to arrive. You must FIRST be licensed as an ATHP to remain legal and compliant with the terms and conditions set forth in our End User License Agreement (EULA).

As an ATHP I understand the billing system is based on average monthly slot count. What does this mean and how exactly do you know how much to bill me for?
Our current and new billing system is already keeping track of ALL TeamSpeak servers being hosted worldwide. All TeamSpeak licensing will be billed in arrears. This means that you will be billed and invoiced on the first day of each month for all hosting that occurred during the previous month. Payments are due on the 15th of every month. Since billing is based on slot count, you will be billed for the AVERAGE number of slots configured (not utilized) on any given TeamSpeak server.

Examples:
  • Suppose you have 10 TeamSpeak servers each at 10 slots starting May 1st. This is a total of 100 slots. Assuming none of your servers change in slot count AND assuming they were online for all 31 days in May you will be billed for a total of 100 slots on June 1st.
  • A 50 slot server that is online for only 15 out of 30 days in the previous month will be billed for 25 slots even though it's configured as a 50 slot server, because it was only ONLINE for 15 out of 30 days. Keep in mind slot count is reported to us on a DAILY basis.
  • Suppose you have 10 TeamSpeak servers each at 10 slots starting May 1st. Your initial slot count is 100 slots. Now suppose 1 of your 10 servers is upgraded to 50 slots on May 15th and remains that way through the end of the month. This means that server had 10 slots for 14 days (May 1st through May 14th) and then had 50 slots for 16 days (May 15th through May 31st). The average number of slots for just that server for the month of May are calculated as follows:

    (10 slots * 14 days) + (50 slots * 16 days) = 940 slots

We then divide 940 by 31 days in May which gives us an average slot count of 30 for just that server. Assuming the other 9 servers stayed at 10 slots throughout all of May, you will be billed for a total slot count as follows:

    (9 servers * 10 slots) + (1 servers * 30 slots) = 120 slots
Note once again that slots are counted whether or not your customers ever use them. So, if you have a 10 slot server running for 30 days, you will be billed for 10 slots regardless of whether your customer chose to use the server.

How do I get my company back on the Authorized Hosters list?
Simple. Register with the website and as soon as we have "cleared" your company of any pending fees we will gladly put you back on the list immediately. Obviously we are using this as an incentive to any prior hosters that were not completely honest with their licensing requirements in the past.

As an ATHP, if I have any servers in a 'stopped state' (i.e. configured but not running/active) will I be billed for usage?
You will NOT be billed for usage on a TeamSpeak server that is in a stopped state.

However, please remember that usage and licensing is based on the AVERAGE monthly slot count. For example, if you have a 50 slot server that was online from September 1st through September 15th, but then you stopped that server or shut it down from September 16th through September 30th, you will be billed for 25 slots total because this is the average usage for the ENTIRE MONTH of September.

Is there a minimum licensed slot count required in order to be considered an ATHP?
Yes, and the minimum slot count is now 100 which amounts to a measly $14 (USD). Our focus is to allow anybody who has a GENUINE INTEREST in becoming an ATHP the opportunity to do so. Considering how 'minimal' a startup hoster's TeamSpeak licensing investment really is compared to other operating costs, we feel the minimum slot count will help eliminate hosters that are not serious about conducting business.

As an ATHP, what if the new billing system tries to bill me for an incorrect amount? Will there be anything in place that will allow me to dispute the charges?
Yes of course! We realize that automating the monthly ATHP billing process may from time to time lead to improper billing and have built a mechanism into the new billing system that will allow you to dispute illegitimate charges - subject to our review. Please email your billing dispute questions to .

I recently sent an email regarding a billing inquiry. When can I expect a response?
The normal turnaround for most questions sent to sales is 24 to 48 hours, excluding U.S. holidays and weekends.
